This interactive tutorial explores the generation of orthogonal or mutually perpendicular (ordinary and extraordinary) waves as the result of light transmission through a Nicol prism. A typical Nicol prism is composed of a doubly refracting (birefringent) material, usually calcite, cut along the plane labeled a-b-c-d , as illustrated in the tutorial window.
PRISMA Flow Diagram The flow diagram depicts the flow of information through the different phases of a systematic review. It maps out the number of records identified, included and excluded, and the reasons for exclusions. Different templates are available depending on the type of review (new or updated) and sources used to identify studies.
Nicol prism is made by taking a calcite crystal whose length is three times its breadth. It consists of two pieces of calcite cut with a 68° angle and stuck together with Canada balsam. The extraordinary ray (see double refraction) passes through the prism while the ordinary ray suffers total internal reflection at the interface between the two crystals, as the refractive index of the calcite is 1.66 for the ordinary 2018-09-10 · Nicol Prisms. Several versions of prism-based polarizing devices were once widely available, and these were usually named after their designers.

Fig.4. Working of Nicol Prism . Nicol Prism as a Polariser: In order to produce and analyze the plane polarized light, we arrange two Nicol prisms. When a beam of unpolarized light is incident on the Nicol prism, emergent beam from the prism is obtained as plane polarized, and which has vibrations parallel to the principal section.
Chart. With the use of a Fresnel bi-prism it was found that the interference fringes disappeared and may be analyzed with a quarter-wave plate (or Babinet compensator) and a nicol prism. A complete diagram of the optical system is shown through a thin prism, dispersion of light and dispersive power of a prism.
Prisms for Polarization. A number of polarizing prisms have been devised which make use of birefringence to separate two beams in a crystalline material.

Construction of Nicol Prism: It is constructed from the calcite crystal PQRS having length three times of its width. Its end faces PQ and RS are cut such that the angles in the principal section become 68° and 112° in place of 71° and 109°.

A Nicol prism is a type of polarizer, an optical device made from calcite crystal used to produce and analyse plane polarized light. It is made in such a way that it eliminates one of the rays by total internal reflection, i.e. the ordinary ray is eliminated and only the extraordinary ray is transmitted through the prism.
